What happens after i've reported an accident to my insurance company?
Q. What will happen after i've reported an accident to my insurance company? Will they sort it out with the insurance company of the other party involved in the accident? Or will i be expected to handle anymore paper work? Just had my first accident, very stressed, please help!

A. I work at an insurance agency. Your company should contact the at fault party and handle everything. You will probably have to speak with an adjuster who will handle your claim. If you have good insurance, things will go smoothly. Hope you're okay.

What to do after an accident if other party's insurance contacts you?
Q. A lot of people have told me that if after an accident, the other party's insurance company contacts me, I should not talk to them at all because they are just trying to find a little detail that would make the car accident my fault. Is this true? Are there any consequences by NOT talking with them?

A. You need to cooperate, but, you also need to be careful of HOW you answer questions. You want to tell the truth, obviously, but be careful of HOW a questions is worded. If you don't feel comfortable to answer questions on the phone as they WILL record your statements, ask for a "one on one" confrontation and have a witness there with you. Feel free to record the conversation yourself. A real BAD question to answer is: "How far away was the other car when you first saw it? A block away? A half block away? A quarter block away?" Your first impression and what you would likely answer is "A quarter block away" - since after all, THAT was the shortest distance of the choices - but, a quarter block is STILL considerable distance away and it… [cont.]

Q. I saw it in the movie Hot Fuzz and it recently brought up the question. Whats the difference between an Car accident and a car collision? please explain in details. I had this question before, but no one really answered it properly. If its not an accident, then they did it on purpose?

A. An accident says there is no one to blame cause it just naturally happened by nature. i.e. A tree fell and everyone scrambled to avoid it. An collision has someone to blame. Someone is doing something wrong, like talking on a cellphone, or simply not paying attention.

A. The only way to prevent and accident is to drive defensively ... always keep your eye out of the other drivers out there. Most accidents happen close to home as they say. I don't think there is anything you could ever do to prevent an accident however ... you simply cannot control the actions of other drivers ... only your own actions and reactions. Your chances of not dying in an accident are greatly decreased by using the safety systems installed in your car ... such as the seat belt. Air bags also save lives ... I have seen this first hand as a paramedic over the past 17 years. I would also add that some cars stand up better in crashes than others. Goodluck and becareful out there ... I am sure you are going to be an excellent driver.

A. I hope you aren't sitting around waiting for them to send it to you...You have to go to the police department and pick it up...Ten days seems like plenty long enough...And, btw, the police officer does not make the final decision regarding liability. He can only decide what he *thinks* happened, being as how he was probably not there. I've noticed a trend by the police whereby they are intentionally not making these kinds of determinations, even in cases where it is very clear who is at fault. I'm sure it has something to do with getting both parties insurance to pay...

A. The brain filters incoming sensory data through a filter of experiences, education, prejudices, and expectations. In some sense the brain presents a simulated view of reality. For example if some detail is not actually perceived, the brain will fill in the gaps to give a complete picture. This is why is it hard to proof read your own writing. The brain reveals what you meant instead of what you wrote.

A. In the case of an accident where there is damage to a vehicle you always call the police to come out and do a police report. The first thing your insurance agent or company is going to ask for is a police report. It has all the dynamics of the accident - this is a legal document that can be taken to court to pursue money to pay for damages to the vehicle or the person if they are injured. The person that hit your friend can deny this accident ever happened. There is nothing that your friend can really do to prove that the accident happened on that respective day, at that respective time, and by that respective person unless there is video / or pictures with time and date stamp or something to that effect. It seems your friend has… [cont.]

A. As an insurance adjuster I have handled many claims like this (including Texas in the early 90's). I have never worked for an insurance company where we were allowed to deny a claim based on theft without having a valid theft report on file with the Police Dept. If there is no official theft report then I would dispute the denial. A denial of payment to you is legit if there is a police theft report on file. In some cities the theft report is separate from the accident report. Since your property was damaged you should have the right to know if there was a theft report filed. If you haven't already done so call the local police and ask them. You always have the choice of using your own homeowners coverage but then you have that pesky… [cont.]

Q. Do I need to report the accident to California DMV if I scratched the rental car while backing from really tight parking space (no one was injured, no other car was involved in an accident, this accident happened at the place where I live currently)? I still don't know the estimate of the damage to their car, but let's assume it's greater than $750. Thanks!

A. Yes, you have to report the accident to the DMV if the damages are over $750 or if there's any bodily injury. If the insurance company reports this before you do, the DMV will suspend your license for not reporting it.

A. I'm a AAA claims adjuster...here's the deal: We (AAA) are conducting 2 different investigations as required by the DOI. 1 is for coverage (known as a Claims Coverage Question), the 2nd is liability. Even though we are looking at the vehicle to assess the damage, this is not in anyway an implication of coverage...all it is is a damage assessment. If the CCQ is cleared (coverage is allowed) then the estimate is already on had for immediate payment. Her parents aren't in the position to determine if AAA will cover something. Coverage questions are very difficult to resolve and can take weeks, sometimes months depending on the situation. There are many legal questions that must be answered prior to extending, or denying, coverage. … [cont.]

What steps do you take after a car accident?
Q. After a minor car accident, what do you have to do? Do you exchange insurance information with the other driver? What do you do with this information? What if you don't agree on who was at fault? Is calling the police always necessary?
Asked by penguinef - Wed Apr 4 22:27:38 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You exchange names, addresses, insurance information, license plate number and phone numbers with the other person involved. Take note of the damage on your vehicle and the other person's vehicle...and remember what happened. Contact your insurance agent and give him/her the details of the accident, the other person's info and the other person's insurance information. In some states, you have to get a police report also. Get a copy and keep it in case the insurance company needs it. In some states, the police always respond, while in others, they will not respond if it's in a parking lot.

A. Thank you for running into each other instead of an innocent person who is following the rules. You stand as much chance as your homeowner paying the bills for your accident as there is that your auto insurance would cover your house burning down. If that's not plain enough, NO. Which ever of you was at fault in the accident owes the other for all damages.
